Israel has authorized a ‘teaspoon’ of aid for Gaza, U.N. chief says

The United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres said on Friday that Israel has only authorized Gaza what “is equivalent to a teaspoon of help when an assistance avalanche is required” and again pointed out that the UN will not participate in a new distribution plan backed by the US.

“Without fast, reliable, safe and sustained access, more people will die, and the long -term consequences in the entire population will be deep,” Guterres told reporters.

Israel says that around 300 aid trucks have entered Gaza through the crossing of Kerem Shalom since he raised an 11 -week block in Gaza on Monday, but Guterres said that until now only one third of those trucks have been transported from the crossing to warehouses inside Gaza due to insecurity.

Israel has allowed help deliveries by the UN and other help groups to briefly resume until a new distribution model backed by the United States, administered by the newly created Humanitarian Foundation of Gaza, is in operation at the end of the month. The UN says that the plan is not impartial or neutral, and that it will not be involved.

Israel said that his blockade had been directed in part to prevent Palestinian militants Hamas from diverting and confiscated help supplies. Hamas has denied stealing help. The GHF Plan implies the use of private security contractors to transport help to the so -called safe centers for distribution by civil humanitarian teams.

“The United Nations have been clear: we will not participate in any scheme that does not respect international law and humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, independence and neutrality,” Guterres said.

The UN and its partners have a plan to obtain the necessary help for Gaza, he said.

“The supplies, 160,000 palettes, enough to fill almost 9,000 trucks, they are waiting,” said Guterres. “This is my attraction for the help to save lives for the people suffered from Gaza: let’s do it well. And let’s do it immediately.
