Iran and the United States will hold a fourth round of conversations about the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic in Rome on Saturday, said Iran Foreign Minister.
The adversaries have long held three rounds of conversations with the objective of an agreement in the program, which the West believes that it is destined to develop nuclear weapons, an accusation that Tehran denies.
The conversations, which began on April 12 and are mediated by Oman, are the highest level contact in years between the two parties.
“The next round of negotiations will take place in Rome,” said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
The main diplomat said that Iranian officials would also meet on Friday with representatives of Great Britain, France and Germany, all parties in the 2015 nuclear agreement.
The agreement requested the lifting of the sanctions in exchange for curbing Iran’s nuclear activities, but it collapsed when Washington retired in 2018 during Donald Trump’s first mandate as president of the United States.
After France threatened that the European trio could reimpose the sanctions, the UN mission of Iran said that “threats and economic blackmail” were “completely unacceptable.”
“Genuine diplomacy cannot proceed under threats or pressure,” said the diplomatic mission in a letter taken Wednesday by Iran. ISNA news agency.
Trump sent a letter in March to the Supreme leader of Iran, Ayatolá Ali Khamenei, urging conversations and warning about the possible military action if Iran refused.
Since he returned to office in January, Trump revived his campaign of “maximum pressure” sanctions, reflecting his approach during his first mandate.
Tehran has insisted that ongoing conversations should focus only on the nuclear problem and the lifting of sanctions.
During the last round in the capital of Omar, Muscat on Saturday, both parties reported progress.
