A snowstorm is interrupting power and services in Iqaluit on Thursday and the city is asking residents to prepare for extended interruptions.
In a press release around 6:40 am on Thursday, the city of Iqaluit said that all city services will be closed until further notice, including water delivery, sewerage and garbage services.
The Nakasuk School, the Joamie School, the AQSarniit School and the Inukshuk Secondary School are closed this morning due to the climatic conditions, according to the Facebook page of the Education Authority of the district of Iqaluit. The district said it would provide an update at 11:30 am
Nunavut government offices in IQaluit are also closed.
The Qulliq Energy Corporation said the interruption is affecting the entire community and that operators are working to restore energy as quickly as possible.
Road cleaning equipment has been removed from the roads for their safety and emergency services only respond to calls when it is safe to do so.
Environment Canada Write that the snowstorm is expected to continue until Thursday afternoon with winds in Iqaluit blowing about 50 kilometers per hour and bursts at 70 km/h.
Residents are asked to remain away from the roads and look for refuge.
