Internet services to face degradation amid repairs to submarine cable: PTCL

Pakistan Telecommunications Limited (PTCL) announced on Monday that users would experience degraded internet services tomorrow (Tuesday) while an undersea cable is being repaired.

In a post on X, PTCL said maintenance work will be carried out on the submarine cable to repair a faulty repeater.

“The activity will begin on October 14… around 11 am PST, and may last up to 18 hours,” the telecom giant said. “During this period, customers will face a degradation of Internet service. We are sorry for the inconvenience, please.”

Meanwhile, internet monitoring service Downdetector showed users reporting problems accessing social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram in Pakistan.

Last month, PTCL warned that cuts to undersea Internet cables in Saudi waters would likely affect Internet services in the country during peak hours.

This is not the first time that damage to undersea Internet cables has affected services in Pakistan.

Internet users across Pakistan complained about slow Internet and difficulty in accessing services during 2024.

On January 3 this year, PTCL said teams were working “diligently” to resolve the issue of outages faced by users after a fault in the AAE-1 submarine internet cable connecting Pakistan slowed down network speeds in the country. Full connectivity was subsequently restored on January 16.
