The Indonesian president, Pabowo, Subianto, spoke on Sunday against protests about economic conditions and inequality, saying that some actions in demonstrations that have extended throughout the country in recent days amounted to betrayal and terrorism.
The largest economy of Southeast Asia was shaken by protests in the main cities, including the capital of Yakarta, in recent days after the propagation of images of a motorcycle taxi driver run over by a police tactical vehicle in a previous demonstration against the benefits for legislators.
“The rights to the Pacific Assembly must be respected and protected. But we cannot deny that there are signs of actions outside the law, even against the law, even bowing towards betrayal and terrorism,” Pabowo said in a speech in Yakarta.
He said that protests should take place peacefully, and if people destroyed public facilities or looted private homes, “the State must intervene to protect their citizens.”
His comments arrive after the Minister of the Chamber of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati AFP Sunday.
IRA has spread to legislators, and according to reports, several have looted their homes in recent days.
The complaints of the protesters are many, but the demonstrations focused this week on the revelation that the legislators were receiving a housing allocation almost 10 times greater than the minimum wage in Yakarta.
At least three people were killed after a fire initiated by protesters in a council building in the eastern city of Makassar.
Two workers died on the scene, and a third person, an official, died in the hospital.
The crowds were seen, cheating and applauding when the flames wrapped the building, with few security forces in sight.
Main test
The protests have extended to other important cities, including yogyakarta, bandung, Semarang and Surabaya in Java and Medan in the province of Sumatra del Norte.
On Saturday, a local council building was burned on the island of Lombok, while a police headquarters in the city of East Javan, Surabaya, was burned.
The protests are the largest and most violent presidency of Pabowo, a key test for the former general less than a year in his rule.
He averaged an investigation into the murder of the driver of the AFFAN Kurniawan motorcycle concert and promised to help his family. Seven officers in the tactical truck were arrested for greater investigation.
The crisis has forced Pabowo to cancel a planned trip to China next week for a military parade that commemorates the end of World War II to monitor the situation.
Pabowo has promised rapid growth driven by the State, but has already faced protests against the budget cuts of the generalized government.
In response to the protests, the application of social networks Tiktok said on Saturday that he had temporarily suspended his live function for “a few days” in Indonesia, where he has more than 100 million users.
