New Delhi: India on Friday responded to comments made by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti, emphasizing that India values its “strategic autonomy” and disagrees with the envoy’s perspective.
Garcetti, while speaking at an event in Delhi on July 11, suggested that “strategic autonomy” has limitations in times of conflict and highlighted the need for countries like India and the United States to defend the principles against rule violations and border transgressions. .
Although Garcetti did not directly reference Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Russia, his comments were seen as criticism of the trip. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told the media: “India, like many other countries, values its ‘strategic autonomy’. The US ambassador is entitled to his opinion. We obviously have different views “.
Jaiswal further added, “Our comprehensive global strategic partnership with the United States allows us to agree to disagree on certain issues, while respecting each other’s views.” He declined to provide details about the diplomatic talks but reiterated that India and the United States regularly discuss bilateral and global issues.
Garcetti also alluded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, stating that “no war is far away” and urging countries to take action against those who violate the peace. He highlighted the importance of trust and collaboration between democratic nations during crises.
On the other hand, Jaiswal commented on the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, recalling Modi’s strong condemnation of the attack and his message of solidarity with the American people. Jaiswal concluded by affirming India’s support for democratic values and its commitment to peaceful international relations.
