India and Qatar are pointing to duplicate their trade to $ 28 billion in the next five years and are exploring the signing of a free trade agreement, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.
The announcement occurred after the conversations between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani de Qatar, which is on a two-day visit to New Delhi.
The two parties also discussed ways to expand energy ties, said an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to journalists.
The Emir arrived in India on Monday and was previously received by Prime Minister Modi at the New Delhi airport, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.
“The visit will further strengthen India and Qatar ties,” he said.
The authorities said the Qatar leader is accompanied by a high -level delegation and that it would be the second visit of Qatar’s Emir to India.
Thani had made a state visit to India in March 2015.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had said that the two countries have “rooted the historical ties of friendship, confidence and mutual respect”, added that the ties between the two countries have continued to strengthen themselves.
