In another incident in the midst of a growing offensive against the alleged espionage, the Indian authorities said Monday that they arrested a paramilitary police officer for “spying for Pakistan” charges after a recent military confrontation between the two neighboring countries.
The developments follow a military confrontation between India and Pakistan about the accusations of New Delhi against Islamabad, without evidence, about a deadly attack in the occupied pahalgama of Kashmir. On the night of May 6 to 7, New Delhi launched a series of air attacks in Pakistan, which resulted in civilian casualties. Islamabad responded by demolishing five Indian planes. After intercepting drones sent by India and the Tit-For-Tat attacks in the air bases, it took the US intervention on May 10 for both parties finally dropping their weapons as the fire was reached.
Last week, the Indian police arrested 10 people in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi, including a Vlogger of Travel and a university professor, for their alleged connections with Pakistan or comments related to the recent escalation.
On Monday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) claimed that a Police Force of the Central Reserve was arrested in Delhi “for sharing confidential information with Pakistani agents.”
“The defendant, Moti Ram Jat, actively participated in the espionage activity and had been sharing classified information related to national security with Pakistan intelligence officers (PIO) since 2023,” the NIA claimed.
Jat has been sent to custody until June 6 by a special court, the agency said, since investigators question it.
The arrest series occurs after the worst outbreak in violence among rivals with nuclear weapons since its last open conflict in 1999.
Ali Khan Mahmudabad, an associate professor at Ashoka University of Haryana, was collected from his home in Delhi last week for his comments on the pressing sessions of the Indian Army press about his actions aimed at Pakistan, called “Operation Sindoor”.
The complaint against Mahmudabad was filed by Yogesh Jatheri, general secretary of the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata party, in the Sonepat de Haryana district, confirmed the academic lawyer Scroll.
Mahmudabad was arrested under crimes related to harmful acts to maintain community harmony, causing claims to cause disharmony, incite secession, armed rebellion or subversive activities and insult religious beliefs.
In a publication on social networks on May 8, Mahmudabad, head of the Department of Political Sciences of the University, had highlighted the apparent irony of the Hindutva right -wing commentators by praising Colonel Sofia Qureshi, who had approached the media informative sessions.
Meanwhile, the Association for the Protection of Civil Rights reported that between April 27 and May 8, there were 184 anti-musulm attacks of various types throughout India.
They comprise 19 acts of vandalism, 39 assaults, 42 harassment incidents and 84 hate speech incidents. It is believed that 106 were “triggered” by Pahalgam. Most occurred in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra.
