The governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, a Democrat, announced Wednesday that he will lead several state agencies to review their ties with El Salvador following what his office called “help the illegal and unconstitutional actions of the Trump administration.”
“The Constitution of the United States guarantees due process. We are witnessing that Donald Trump erodes our fundamental constitutional rights in real time, and we must fight to restore the balance of power. The state of Illinois will defend the state of law and do everything that is in our power to prevent the Trump administration from destroying our most basic rights”, it is considered that Pritzer, which is considered a potential candidate of 2028 2028, in a statement.
In a statement, Pritzker’s office said he had ordered several Illinois pension funds to review whether they are invested in a company based in El Salvador and had ordered the Illinois Central Management Department of Central Management Services to evaluate whether state acquisition contracts have been granted to companies based or controlled by El Salvador.
The Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, has taken Trump’s side in recent weeks in the case of high profile deportation of Kilmar Abrego García. The Trump administration admits that Abrego García was deported by mistake to El Salvador, but argues that he was a member of the Violent MS-13 gang, despite his wife’s statements and his lawyer to the contrary.
The Trump administration members have also said that because Abrego García is in the custody of El Salvador, they cannot bring him back to the United States. Bukele has refused to free Abrego García.
“Of course I’m not going to do it,” Bukele told journalists during an Oval office meeting with Trump this month. “The question is absurd.”
On Sunday, Senator Chris Van Hollen, D-MD., Who visited Abrego García in El Salvador last week, he said in “Meet The Press” of NBC News that the country’s disinvaluation could be a method to press Bukele to free Abrego García.
“There are also pressures that we can put in the Government of El Salvador, even through, you know, the people who decide not to invest in El Salvador, the Americans who do not travel to El Salvador. So I think there are other points of pressure,” said Van Hollen.
