The HCRP previously condemned the “arbitrary arrest of human rights defenders Tahira Abdullah and Samina Omar in Islamabad” in a position on X. According to the post, the couple was arrested outside the National Press Club before protesting in solidarity with the people of Gaza.
“Since none of them was part of any public meeting at that time, their actions in no way constitute a violation of section 144 as the police alleged,” said the statement.
Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure is a legal provision that allows district administrations to prohibit an assembly of four or more people in an area for a limited period.
The statement said the commission was “worried to knowing that [the women] They are supposedly not given access to their legal advisor. ”
“Both Mrs. Abdullah and Mrs. Omar must be immediately and unconditionally released,” said HRCP.
The protest was organized by former senator Jamat-I-Islami (JI) Mushtaq Ahmad Khan. Today early, he announced the call to protest in an X publication, declaring: “This is an appeal for participation.”
Before its launch, HRCP activist Tariq Mehmood Ghouri said Dawn.com That Abdullah and Omar were arrested at the Women’s Police Station in Sitara Market, Islamabad, along with two other female activists belonging to the JI.
“They have been accused under section 188 (disobedience to the order duly promulgated by the public servant)”, of the Pakistan Criminal Code, said, adding that one of JI’s activists is Mushtaq’s daughter.
Tariq also said that seven men were also arrested and that they were arrested at the Kohsar police station.
Former Senator Mustaq and other activists have also been previously arrested for organizing pro -gaza protests in the Federal Capital for violating section 144.
In September of last year, the police picked up Mushtaq, his wife and his son along with more than two dozen protesters, during an organized march to express solidarity with the people of Gaza. The former senator had asked for the rally and asked the people to meet in Express Chowk, one of the entrance points of the Red High Security Zone from the D-Howk side.
In March 2024, the capital of the capital had reserved the former senator and another 350 for several positions, including the fight of the law agents with stones and threatening them with serious consequences, after they organized a protest in Express Chowk in relation to Palestine.
