The lawyers of the man accused of killing the CEO of United of United, Brian Thompson, in New York City, gave him clothes for an audience last month that included a hidden heart -shaped note that promoted his public support, prosecutors said Tuesday.
The note was found in a couple of Argyle socks delivered to Luigi Mangione for his appearance in a room of the Manhattan court on February 21 for state positions of murder and terrorism, according to a letter from the Office of the Manhattan district prosecutor.
“Know there are thousands of people who wish him luck,” said the note, according to the letter, who addressed the judge who supervises the case.
A second heart -shaped note was addressed to an unknown person named Joan, says the presentation. The defense spokesman is called Joan, but it is not clear if the note was intended for it. He could not be contacted to comment on Wednesday.
In a presentation on Wednesday, Mangione’s lawyers published photos of both notes and said that they were included inadvertently with clothes. One was not destined for Mangione, according to the presentation, while the other includes a second line not mentioned in the Charter of the Prosecutor’s Office: “We are all supporting it! Keep the head up.”
Mangione, 26, declared himself innocent of the first degree murder positions to promote terrorism and other crimes.
Manhattan’s district prosecutor Alvin Bragg, has called the murder “a terrifying, planned and objective murder that was intended to cause shock, attention and intimidation.”
The writings of Mangione and the publications on social networks indicate that he suffered an injury that alters life before December 4, when Thompson was shot dead outside a hotel in the center of Manhattan, authorities said. Mangione was not secured by UnitedHealthcare.
When Mangione was arrested five days later in Pennsylvania, he was found with a handwritten document that referred to the medical care industry that said: “These parasites made it come,” sources of application of the law to NBC News said.
The murder caused discussions about the United States medical care industry and attracted dozens of supporters to the audience of February 21.
In Tuesday’s letter, the first instance lawyer, Joel Seidmann, wrote that imprisoned defendants generally wear clothes issued by jail, but that special accommodations were made to adapt to Mangione’s “fashion needs”. That benefit was “raped” when a researcher responsible for searching in the clothing bag discovered the notes, says the presentation.
In the presentation of the defense, Mangione’s lawyers said that wearing normal clothes for a court in the court is not a special accommodation and that many defendants can do so.
It is not clear if the notes arrived in Mangione. According to the letter, he received the socks and tried them before eliminating them because “they did not look good,” according to the document.
Seidmann also urged the judge to deny Mangione’s request from a laptop, which has tried to review the evidence in the case.
“The defendant has broad access to desktop computers,” Seidmann wrote.
In a separate presentation earlier this month, prosecutors revealed that the content of the backpack mangion was found in Pennsylvania.
Among the articles were thrown, adhesive tape, a black firearm, a Glock magazine, a silencer and more than a dozen 9 mm rounds, according to the file.
Mangione, who is detained in the federal prison in Brooklyn, faces a possible prison life sentence without the possibility of probation if he is convicted. He was also accused of federal harassment crimes, murder by using a firearm and a crime of firearms, which include the possibility of the death penalty.
