Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Tuesday that the Government has decided to improve the country’s water storage capacity, given India’s designs to arm water.
India in April celebrated the Water Treaty of the Indo (IWT) in suspense after the attack in the occupied asshling pahalgama that killed 26, a new delhi incident to Islamabad without evidence. The treaty assigns the six rivers of the Indo Basin between the two countries: India obtains the Eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej), while Pakistan receives almost 80 percent of the water from the Western rivers (Indo, Jhelum, Chenab).
Pakistan described any attempt to suspend his water to share a “act of war”, noting that the IWT had no provision for unilateral suspension. He later said that he was considering judicial action, citing a violation of the Vienna Convention of 1969 on the Law of Treaties. The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in Hague also ruled that India cannot suspend or maintain the IWT in suspense.
During a visit to the National Emergency Operations Center today, the prime minister referred to the order of PCA, emphasizing that India had no authority to suspend the IWT unilaterally.
“But the enemy has certain evil designs against Pakistan and wants to take measures against the Water Treaty. For that, the government has decided that we will build our water storage.”
He said the government would build a “non -controversial water storage capacity” using resources such as the Diamer Bhasha and others.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said there was a clear clause in the 1991 water agreement between the provinces to build on the capacity of water.
“We will develop this capacity with our own resources in the coming years. There is a fundamental role of the National Disaster Management Authority in this.”
The prime minister directed that weather warnings and calamity threats should be issued regularly through telephone messages in collaboration with the Telecommunications Authority of Pakistan.
The prime minister told the disastrous impacts of catastrophic floods in 2022. He said that Pakistan unfortunately was among the countries of the world map that could be beaten by natural disasters such as cloudbursts, although he barely had a contribution to the greenhouse effect.
During the year 2022, Pakistan had suffered more than any country in the world, he said. More than 1,700 lives were damaged, large sections of farmlands were damaged, houses and infrastructure were damaged, and the national treasure suffered losses of RS30 billion, according to government estimates.
The prime minister also said that the glacial fusion due to heat waves also demanded the highest level of preparation.
“What happened in Swat in which precious lives were lost, wrapped the entire nation on a penumbra lever,” he said and emphasized that the interested parties in the matter should take an honest review of the incident, directing a formulation of an integral mechanism in collaboration with the provinces to avoid such occurrences in the future.
The prime minister also ordered a report in this regard.
He opplied that after the floods of 2022, the relevant ministers negotiated the public-private subsidies and associations to build resistant infrastructure in the country.
The Prime Minister appreciated the National Emergency Operations Center and expressed the hope that the relevant authorities will completely use the resistant platform for the progress of the social sectors and economy of the country.
He also assured government’s full support to strengthen the institute and its capacity development.
The prime minister expected the installation to be connected with the provinces and could transmit real -time information with interventions such as an early alert system.
During his visit, the president of the NDMA, Lieutenant General Inam Haider, Inam Haider, gave him information about the current season of the monsoon, the situation of flooding and precautionary measures taken in this regard.
