The governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karim Kundi, condemned on Thursday the reported prohibition of the Punjab government on the supply of wheat to his province.
Kundi had expressed her regret last week for the reports that Punjab’s wheat supply had been suspended. However, Punjab officials commissioned the maintenance of basic products supplies and the regulation of their prices denied that there was some prohibition of the interprovincial grain movement.
“The arbitrary prohibition imposed on August 31, 2025 by the Punjab government on the supply of wheat and flour to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a flagrant violation of article 151 of the Constitution and a serious violation of the National Unity,” Kundi said in X.
Article 151 of the Constitution establishes that “trade, commerce and sexual relations throughout Pakistan will be free”, but empowers Parliament to “impose restrictions on freedom of commerce, commerce or sexual relations between one province and another or within any part of Pakistan as necessary in the public interest.”
The governor of KP also pointed out: “As a result, the price of a 20 kg flour bag has shot at approximately 1,200 in Punjab and even RS 2,800 in KP, an unbearable load for families who already fight against inflation.
“On behalf of the people of KP, I firmly condemn this discriminatory act and boost Prime Minister Punjab [Maryam Nawaz] to not only condemn but also immediately withdraw this verbal prohibition, ”he added.
Emphasizing that food security cannot be “compromised by provincial barriers,” Kundi also asked the KP Government of the PTI to “urgently provide wheat fees to flour mills to stabilize prices and protect the rights of our people.”
Yesterday, the KP Assembly unanimously approved a resolution, denouncing the “restrictions” of the Punjab government about the supply of wheat amid claims on a 68 percent increase in flour prices throughout the province.
The sharp increase in prices is evident in brand flour, with some mills increasing the cost of a five -kilogram bag of fine flour to RS700, compared to RS500 on August 1 and RS600 on September 1, despite the arrival of the new wheat harvest earlier this year.
The problem came to light earlier this month, when the KP chapter of the entire Pakistan Flour Mill Association said that the Punjab government had imposed a prohibition of the interprovincial movement of wheat and called it “unconstitutional.”
Some market analysts believe that the current wheat crisis is not related to recent floods in Punjab and other regions, since the new wheat harvest was harvested in March/April. However, the accumulators, the warehouses and investors are having substantial wheat stocks, waiting for more price increases promoted by the dynamics of supply and demand.
On Tuesday, Punjab Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a three -day grace period so that all wheat hoarders voluntarily declare their inventory or action in front.
The Government has also recently presented a new roadmap for the ‘National Strategy for the Management of the Policy and Wheat Wheat’ by 2025-26 and from now on that it will serve as a long-term plan to guarantee food security, safeguard the living means of farmers, protect consumers and generate resilience against market disruptions and climatic emergencies.
