New Delhi: The Government has established an objective to build 10,000 km of national roads (NHS) in 2025-26, according to the budget document, which is the lowest in the last seven years since 2018-19. The details of road construction since 2018-19 show that the lowest was 10,237 km in 2019-20 and the highest was 13,327 km in 2020-21 despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the last financial year, the general construction of NH was 12,349 km. The authorities said that by March of this year, the Ministry hopes to achieve around 10,500 km.

The sources said that, although the objective of the FY26 can be reviewed at a later stage, the rhythm will continue to be lower since there are now less number of road projects that are under implementation. The slow rhythm of the award of new projects in 2023-24 and the current financial year will affect the construction in the next two financial years.
According to the detailed budget document, the Ministry has established the objective to raise around 30,000 million rupees of the monetization of complete road projects and obtain around 35,000 million rupees.
The Government has also allocated RS 128 million rupees for the implementation of an effective treatment to road accident victims in all states and UTS. Currently, the scheme has been implemented in Assam, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Pusucherry. The Ministry of Transportation on the road has established a goal to eliminate 1,000 ‘black points’ in NHS and carry out 40,000 km road safety audits.
