Google said on Monday that their maps will use names for Denali and the Gulf of Mexico favored by President Donald Trump, Mount McKinley and the Gulf of America, when federal maps make the change.
In an executive order signed on its first day back in office on January 20, the president ordered the Interior Secretary to make the changes within 30 days.
Trump’s order said the new names would have to be reflected in the Federal Geographic Name Information System (GNI) administered by the United States Geological Service, which operates under the Department of the Interior. The spokesmen of the survey did not immediately respond to the requests for comments on Monday.
The United States Senate is in the process of considering Trump’s candidate for the Secretary of the Interior, the former Governor of Norte Doug Burgum, who answered questions during a confirmation hearing on January 16.
In a statement about X, Google suggested that any name change driven by GNIS for Google Maps would be carried out as a long data policy.
“We have a long practice to apply name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” he said.
The technology company said that when GNIS makes the changes, the changes for Google Maps will continue quickly. “When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the United States quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America,” Google said.
However, the company said Trump and the United States are not always global arbitrators of places names.
If the new names are not recognized outside the United States, the names accepted in each country will be reflected in Google Maps, said the company, which means that Denali and the Gulf of Mexico can continue to be their names outside the United States.
The two Alaska senators oppose change, saying that Denali serves as a necessary reminder of the deep indigenous history of the State.
The spokesmen of Apple’s own maps, natives of the iPhone, did not immediately respond to a request for comments on Monday.
