Ghislaine Maxwell’s transfer to cushy prison camp is a ‘travesty of justice,’ ex-BOP official says

Not long after it was first reported that Ghislaine Maxwell was transferred to one of the most comfortable federal detention centers in the country, a private Facebook group dedicated to current federal prisons employees and previous exploded in a state of shock and indignation.

The Federal Prison Field in Bryan, Texas, is one of the seven federal safety facilities of minimum safety style in the bedroom that generally do not have inmates such as Maxwell, 63, who are convicted of sexual crimes and comply with long sentences.

“As a retired Bop employee, this makes me sick,” a person wrote on the Facebook page of “Prison and Retirement Office.”

“Since when are sexual criminals allow in the camp?” Another wrote. “I don’t care who broke, it’s a damn people’s trafficker.”

NBC News reviewed the screenshots of the page, which were provided by one of the group members. The Facebook group is open only for those who approve an extensive research process to ensure, in fact, current or previous BOP employees, according to the member who has knowledge of how it is administered.

Vito Maraviglia, a special investigation agent from the withdrawal, said in an interview that in his 27 years at work he does not remember an instance in which a sexual offender was transferred to a prison field. Placing Maxwell meant that it would be easier for her to escape or for someone abroad to point it on the fields of the camp, said Maraviglia.

“The logic for me is not there,” he added. “The smell test does not pass.”

Robert Hood, former chief of internal affairs of the Prison Office, told NBC News in an email that Maxwell’s transfer to the camp in Bryan is a “parody of justice.”

“Relocating a sexual offender who serves a field of a field club 20 years is offensive for victims and others that serve similar crimes,” he wrote Hood, who also served as director in Adx Florence “Supermax” in Colorado.

Maxwell celebrates a 20 -year prison sentence for recruiting and preparing adolescents so that their confidant is sexually abused by his confidant, Jeffrey Epstein. His case has gained renewed attention in recent weeks as a growing choir of critics, mainly right -wing and Trump supporters, have criticized the administration’s decision not to release all federal archives related to EPStein.

Maxwell had been locked in a low security center in Tallahassee, Florida, which housed men and women. But she was transferred to women, the Federal Minimum Security Prison Field in Texas last week after She and her lawyer answer questions to the attached attorney general Todd Blanche for nine hours for two days.

Josh Lepird, regional vice president of the Federal Union of Prison officers that includes Maxwell’s new home, said in an interview that any inmate would like to fulfill their time in the prison field in Bryan.

“Have you ever heard of the old ‘fed club’ they used to talk about? This is one of those places,” Lepird said. “It’s really a great place to make your time if you’re an inmate.”

The inmates held in the facilities have more programs available for them, Lepird said, including one that involves training service dogs for people with disabilities. They also have the freedom to wander through their land, which are surrounded by a small fence and not wire or shaving walls.

The exhaust risk is among the reasons why sexual criminals and others who committed violent crimes are not placed in camps such as Bryan, according to the current and former federal employees of the prison.

As NBC News has previously reported, the prison office rules require sexual criminals to be held in a low -level security prison such as FCI Tallahassee, unless they receive an exemption. Only the administrator of the Center for Designation and Calculation of BOP sentences can make that decision, according to the exemption policy.

Lepird, the union official, He said it was “very strange” that an inmate like Maxwell was transferred there.

“The best thing I can say is that there is some kind of cooperation involved,” he said.

The prison office has confirmed the transfer of Maxwell, but has not provided an explanation. A spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comments.

Maxwell’s lawyer, David Oscar Markus, has not answered the questions about the transfer.

Epstein, El Financiero Rico, died in a prison in New York City in 2019 while waiting for the trial for sexual traffic charges. His death was considered suicide. But that finding did little to mold the conspiracy theorists and others who believe that Epstein was killed to protect other powerful men involved in their traffic ring and that the federal government is in it.

The comments of the Attorney General Pam Bondi have fed fousting suspicions. In February, Bondi told Fox News that a list of Epstein customers was “sitting on my desk right now” waiting to be reviewed and released (he later said he referred to the entire file). But on July 6, the DOJ and the FBI announced that an exhaustive review of Epstein’s case had not discovered evidence that justified other people’s criminal investigation, which caused a fierce reaction of some of Trump’s most burning supporters.

With the controversy consuming headlines And Trump’s presidency was sent to talk to Maxwell, a very unusual movement by a senior official of the Department of Justice. But it is not clear what was discussed or what are the next steps.

Questions have also emerged about the reliability of Maxwell given that prosecutors and the judge who supervised their 2021 trial have said that he had made multiple false statements under oath.

But Maxwell’s transfer was received with relief by at least one person who is not convicted sexual offender.

In the Private Facebook group, a member who identified himself as a staff member at Florida’s facilities where Maxwell had held that they were not going to miss her.

“I’m glad to get rid of her,” the person wrote. “She is an absolute pain in the ass.”
