The NDP national campaign director has sent a memorandum to all candidates and campaign staff that warn them that they are prepared for a federal election from March 10.
CBC obtained a copy of the memorandum entitled “Time and Electoral Planning”, sent on Wednesday to about 140 nominated candidates and their organizing teams.
“It is becoming increasingly likely that Mark Carney is the next liberal leader on March 9,” wrote Jennifer Howard, who leads the federal campaign of 2025 of the NDP, in the Memo.
“If Mark Carny wins the leadership, we listen to many Ottawa sources that he intends to call a choice shortly after becoming a liberal leader.”
The memorandum establishes that Parliament needs to return, given the threats of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to Canadian sovereignty and the economic threat of tariffs. He also points out that none of the liberal leadership candidates has contacted opposition leaders to discuss emergency legislation to deal with Trump and cushion the coup to Canadians.
“On that basis, we believe that rumors that Mr. Carney calls a quick choice is credible,” says the memorandum. “Taking a page of Doug Ford’s play book, liberals believe they can turn this crisis into a political benefit for them.”
The CBC survey tracker shows support for conservatives to soften and a modest blow to Canadians who support the liberals. It also shows a weakening of support for NDP.
In the Memorandum, obtained for the first time by the Globe and Mail, Howard tells the campaign teams that the NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and his candidates can offer “a real progressive election in this election”.
The note suggests that the key problems that will define the new democratic campaign are the cost of living, timely access to a doctor and frame the conservatives and liberals who work for “multimillionaire CEO”, while NDP parliamentarians focus on issues that matter for working people and families.
It also establishes that the party will have a plan to combat climate change, create jobs and work with indigenous communities to “perform true justice and reconciliation.”
