A man from southern California accused of killing his wife and fleeing to Peru with his children given Wednesday to the authorities of the South American country, authorities said.
The National Police Force of Peru said that Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo was delivered to Interpol headquarters in Lima and is arrested.
Cabrera, 36, was sought for a murder charge in the death of August 10, Sheylla Cabrera, 33. The position includes accusations that he used a knife as a mortal weapon, according to the Office of the District Prosecutor of Los Angeles County.
The video published by the Peruvian Police showed him handcuffed, with an Interpol badge in his shirt.
It is expected to take several months to extradite Cabrera to the United States, said the department of the Los Angeles County Sheriff in a press release.
His three children were found on August 16 in Peru and taken in protective custody, said Sheriff’s department last week.
In a statement, Nathan Hochman district prosecutor described the accusations against Cabrera as “horrible” and said that domestic violence “creates chaos in our communities and destroys families. My office is committed to bringing stability to the lives of those who have been victims.”
The prosecutor claimed that Cabrera killed his wife on August 10 at his home in Lancaster, north of Los Angeles, before fleeing to Peru with his children.
Sheylla Cabrera was reported as missing on August 12. His body was found the next day in the National Forest of Angeles, according to the department of the Sheriff.
The security video published by the authorities showed Cabrera dragging what the Sheriff’s department described as “a large object in a large piece of material” of its apartment complex.
Sheylla Cabrera’s body was found in similar material, said Sheriff’s department.
