France’s Foreign Minister is organizing a conference at the UN next week about a solution of two states. Last month, Macron expressed his “determination to recognize the state of Palestine”, and has pressed for a broader movement towards a solution of two states, in parallel with the recognition of Israel and his right to defend himself.
Thursday’s announcement occurred shortly after the United States cut the conversations of Alto El Fuego de Gazar in Qatar, saying that Hamas was not showing good faith.
The impulse has been building against Israel in recent days. Earlier this week, France and more than two dozen mostly European countries condemned Israel’s restrictions in the shipments of help to the territory and the murders of hundreds of Palestinians who tried to reach food.
The Palestinians are looking for an independent state in the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem East and Gaza annexed, territories that Israel occupied in the War of the Middle East of 1967. The Government of Israel and the majority of its political class have long opposed the Palestine state and now they say that it would reward the militants after the October 7 attack on October 7, 2023.
Israel attached Jerusalem, shortly after the 1967 war and considers it part of its capital. In the West Bank, dozens of settlements have built, some that resemble extensive suburbs, which now house more than 500,000 Jewish settlers with Israeli citizenship. The 3 million Palestinians of the territory live under the Israeli military government, with the Palestinian authority that exercises limited autonomy in population centers.
