Yesterday’s accumulated rainwater continued to present challenges to the citizens of Karachi on Wednesday when the number of deaths for rain -related incidents rose to eight and Sindh prepared for more showers this week.
The rains severely tightened Karachi’s fragile infrastructure, which caused the drains and sewers of rainwater to explode, together with the interruption of industrial operations in the economic center. Several areas experienced an interruption of energy and internet services. Due to the seriousness of the situation, the provincial administration today announced a holiday in the city.
According to separate statements issued by Karachi Rescue 1122, two more people died in rain -related incidents, in addition to yesterday’s six deaths.
The Volunteers of the Marines service of Edhi recovered the body of a 50 -year -old man, identified as Abbas Mohsin, who disappeared yesterday in a Nullah near the Gurumandir area, said Rescue 1122. His body was taken to the Karachi Civil Hospital (ChK).
In Phase 5 of the Defense Housing Authority (DHA), the Volunteers of the Marine Service of Edhi recovered the body of the Yasir motorcycle cyclist, 19, after being informed about an electrocution incident. The man’s body was transferred to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medicine Faculty (JPMC).
A man and a woman were injured after part of an old building collapsed in the Ranchores line, a statement from the Edhi rescue service said. Both were taken to Chk in an ambulance.
The Government of Sindh ordered that all public and private education institutions in the entire city remain closed today, after the mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, declared an emergency of rain.
In an X post, Wahab warned citizens: “It is expected to rain again from 2 pm
The rainwater still accumulated in multiple roads through the city, including near II Chundrigar Road, since Karachi witnessed sunny skies without more rain so far.
While the Traffic Police listed at least 10 derivations and three main roads as closed due to urban floods, the mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, presented a contrasting image in his social media accounts, sharing videos of only those routes that were clear for vehicles.
The mayor of PPP shared filmed videos from inside a car of a trip along the Sher Shah Suri road, underground submarine, Shahrah-i-Pakistan and Liaqatabad No. 10 that leads to Daak Khana, which did not have rainwater in the videos.
In a publication about X, Wahab urged citizens not to use Shaheed–Millat Road at this time, since “the work is being carried out to clear the underground steps.” He suggested using the Stadium Road or Shahrah-I-Qaideen as alternative routes.
In an update at 12:37 PM, the Karachi Traffic Police said that several deviations and roads in the city’s multiple districts were closed due to the accumulation of rainwater.
In the East district, Shaheed-i-Millat Road, Tariq Road UnderPass and Dright Road Subpase to the airport closed by traffic.
In Central District, Nazimabad No. 1 Undergrounds, Nazimabad No. 2 Undergrounds, Liaquatabad No. 10 Undergrounds and Underground Steps of Gharibad closed.
In the Malir district, the underground passage of Sohrab Goth was inaccessible, while in the Korangi district, both roads of the Korangi crossing and the EBM roadway were closed.
The traffic police advised travelers who called the 1915 traffic help line for alternative route options to avoid inconveniences.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, Wahab said: “Climate chnage is a reality. If you want to make someone a criticism target and say what you want, you can. But, you can see how big it is a challenge is a climate change for any government, state, administration worldwide.”
By pointing out that the Pakistan faced “different challenges” of developed countries, the mayor of PPP said that climate change had also caused ravages in other parts of the country in recent weeks.
He stressed that people had two options: change our behavior to combat climate change or criticize others. He compared the torrential rains yesterday in Karachi with which Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, other areas of the North and Islamabad faced this monsoon.
Wahab explained that spells had to rain on Tuesday, with the first one that ended before 9:30 am, providing the city administration to work to eliminate rainwater. “At 12:30 pm, the situation had been solved and the main arteries of his city were open.”
However, the second spell began around 1:15 pm and continued “non -stop” until 6 pm, the mayor of PPP said.
Yesterday’s rains severely flooded the main arteries of Karachi, including Sharea Faisal, Ma Jinnah Road and II Chundrigarh Road, with hundreds of submerged cars and motorcycles and travelers trapped in traffic traffic jams for several hours. Many had to cross the water to the waist in the business district while trying to return home.
Shortly after heavy rains arrived in the city, the power cuts spread around the city, sinking several areas in the dark. Even exclusive neighborhoods, such as DHA and Clifton, were severely affected, with rainwater flooding houses and joined the misery of residents.
National and international flight operations at the Jinnah International Airport were also affected, and the Pakistan Aviation Authority (PAA) confirmed that several flights were delayed, canceled or diverted to an alternative airport due to bad weather.
