Around 100 fish harvesters filled the lobby of the St. John Convention Center, an hour ahead of the first electoral rally of liberal leader Mark Carney. However, the fishing minister, Joanne Thompson, agreed to meet three FFAW members, spreading the situation.
As a result, FFAW’s leadership told protesters to leave the lobby and stay out.
The group has remained Pacific with security and police closely watching, inside and outside the building. Some harvesters say they have come from outside the city for today’s protest.

The Pesces de Terranova and Labrador collectors quickly recovered on Sunday afternoon after the cuts to snow crabs and what they call the poor management of the fishing of the liberals.
Around 100 crowds gathered peacefully outside the campaign office of Federal Fisheries Joanne Thompson in St. John’s in the hope of receiving an explanation for the main cuts to collect snow crab in the 3K area. The division is losing almost a quarter of the total allowed capture last year at 7,643 tons, below 9,998 tons in 2024.
The president of Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW), Dwan Street, said it was cautiously optimistic about Thompson assuming the fishing portfolio.
I hoped that Thompson, a panel companion, would make decisions to benefit the communities in his province.
“Never in my life have I seen the brightness out of a fishing minister as fast as I have done with Minister Thompson,” said Street. “It was a political victory. He was given a golden opportunity.”
The crowd invited Thompson and Prime Minister Mark Carney, who will be in St. John’s tonight for his first campaign demonstration at the St. John Convention Center, to go to the protesters.
The FFAW president on the coast, Jason Sullivan, said the liberals are killing Rural Newfoundland.
“Nobody gives AF – – – About Newfounder,” Sullivan told the crowd. “When you find Carbon Tax to Carney tonight, you must show you that you are not weak.”
