A convoy of 40 vehicles carrying food and other necessities was sent to Kurram district on Wednesday after being detained in Thall for five days, according to government officials.
Clashes stemming from decades of land disputes have claimed at least 130 lives since November, and shortages of food and medicine have been reported due to weeks-long road blockades.
After months of violence, a peace agreement was signed between the warring parties on January 1. Despite a lull in fighting, the road connecting Parachinar to the rest of the province remained blocked.
However, on January 4, a government convoy was attacked near Bagan area, in which Kurram deputy commissioner was also injured. Since then, the convoy has been stranded.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson, lawyer Muhammad Ali Saif, said 10 of the trucks, destined for the Bagan area, had arrived safely.
“Thirty vehicles destined for Parachinar and other areas of upper Kurram will also arrive soon,” he said.
Lawyer Saif added that the convoy left after talks with protesters in the Bagan area were successfully concluded on Tuesday night.
“More convoys will soon be sent to the restive district.”
On the other hand, MPA Ali Hadi said that the commissioner and the regional police officer (RPO), together with the authorities concerned, fully cooperated in the departure of the first convoy.
He added that practical steps were being taken on 14 more points of the agreement, including sending more convoys.
Authorities have assured that necessary measures will be taken to protect people’s lives and property, including the safety of roads, Hadi said.
Qadar Orakzai, a member of the Lower Kurram jirga, said Sunrise that 15 trucks bound for Upper Kurram have entered the boundaries of the zone after passing through the lower region.
Meanwhile, Sajid Turi, another member of the upper Kurram Jirga, also confirmed the development, saying that the trucks meant that Parachinar had entered the Alizai area.
According to the district administration, trucks with relief supplies sent by KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) were sent to Bagan area.
The relief supplies include blankets, warm clothes, food and other essential items, the district administration said.
He further added that the convoy entered Kurram from Hangutorpal check post and added that it was heading towards Parachinar, Boshehra and other areas.
