Federal authorities plan to increase Chicago agents from next week to expand operations to detain unauthorized immigrants, two federal officials of the Law to NBC News said Thursday.
The plans involve the application of immigration and customs, the border patrol and other federal agencies, officials said.
Chicago, a city administered by Democrat, has policies that prevent the local police from asking immigration status, which is a federal issue. The city is not associated with ICE and says that doing so would damage the efforts of the Local Police to combat the crime causing people to be afraid to contact or cooperate with the officers.
The city’s decision not to cooperate with ICE has caused the anger of the Trump administration and the “border tsar” Tom Homan.
President Donald Trump, who frequently criticizes Chicago, has recently suggested that he would display the National Guard to the city, something criticized by Illinois governor JB Pritzker, who said: “Mr. President, does not come to Chicago.”
“You are not desired here or need here,” said Pritzker this week. He has also said that Trump is “trying to make a crisis.”
As part of the plan, the border patrol will operate from a naval base outside the city as a staging area, officials said.
It was not clear how long the scalled operations will continue in Chicago or if the National Guard will also be used.
The National Security Department did not denied or confirmed the plans on Thursday, but said that “President Trump has been clear: we will make our streets and cities safe again.”
Pritzker said Thursday that the Trump administration has not contacted him or his administration on any plan.
“They are only looking to invade the city of Chicago, not coordinate with the police, with whom they should coordinate, not coordinate with the state of Illinois, the governor or the mayor of the city,” he said.
The White House has launched a repression of immigration nationwide that Trump promised during his presidential campaign, which included events in which the supporters had signs of “deporting them all.”
In June, a large -scale immigration operation addressed to Los Angeles caused protests, and there was violence and looting that then led Mayor Karen Bass to impose a curfew on the center. Like Chicago, Los Angeles is a city administered by Democrat with policies that prevent the police from carrying out the federal immigration application.
The Trump administration sent Los Angeles to the National Guard, citing protests and the protection of federal buildings and officials as justification.
The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, described the deployment of the illegal National Guard and “political theater.” Other officials from California, including bass, have to measure a political motivation trick aimed at terrorizing city residents and said the National Guard was not necessary.
