A Fedex loading plane that travels from Newark to Indianapolis hit a bird during takeoff on Saturday morning, according to the officials.
Fedex Flight 3609 hit the bird while leaving, damaging one of the Boeing 767 engines, said the Federal Aviation Administration in a statement.
The videos that circulate in X seem to show the plane on fire while in the air.
The plane made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport around 8:07 AM, according to the New York Port Authority and New Jersey. No injuries were reported.
“Our B767 team declared an emergency and returned safely to Newark after dealing with the damage resulting from the engine, including a fire in the engine,” Fedex said in a statement shared with NBC News, and added that they are grateful for the “rapid actions” of the crew and the first to respond.
The plane is disabled on a track at the airport, and FAA is investigating the incident.
This is not the first aviation incident to appear in the headlines this week.
Earlier this week, a flight from Delta Air Lines returned to Atlanta after her crew reported “possible smoke” on the plane.
An American Airlines flight that was traveling from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome a week after a bomb threat was made against the plane.
The day before that, a Delta flight to Australia returned to Los Angeles International Airport after smoke was detected in its galley.
