A federal police soldier died when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a forest control point along the Karakoram road in the Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan, police said Sunday.
Police Deputy Inspector (DIG) Diamer Farrukh Rasheed said in a statement: “The deceased has been identified as Muhammad Gul Sher of Dera Ismail Khan.
“The reason behind the attack is not yet known, and the police are investigating the case. The suspects fled with the deceased’s weapon.”
The main superintendent of the Abdul Hameed police said Dawn.com“The unknown assailants opened fire at the control point while the deceased was on service and his colleagues were asleep.”
He added that police teams attacked nearby areas to look for suspects. In his statement, he speculated that the case seemed to be related to terrorism, discarding personal enmity or an attempt to smuggled with wood.
The forest control point was located on the Thore road, mainly to inspect the vehicles for wood smuggling through the road, which connects the KKH with forest areas in the district.
GB Prime Minister Haji Gulbar Khan condemned the attack, saying: “Shooting for terrorists in state staff is an unacceptable act.”
According to a statement, he ordered the Police to take the perpetrators to Justice and sought a report on the incident of the Department of Origin.
GB government spokesman Faizullah Faraq said in a separate statement that funeral prayers by martyred soldier were offered in the police lines in Chilas, and that they were preparing to send the body to their hometown.
In 2023, at least nine people lost their lives and 21 passengers received injuries after a bus bound for Islamabad was criticized in a terrorist attack near Chilas in the Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan.
