Fact-check: Website impersonating Dawn.com circulates false report


A supposed news website posing as dawn.com It is currently online and accessible. The website actively shares fake news and misinformation while pretending to be part of Dawn Media Group.

The website is not a part of, associated with, or in any way connected with Dawn Media Group.

The website, which operates from the URL https://dawn.newspot.live, recently shared a ‘news report’ about PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan allegedly complaining about institutional overreach. When verified through multiple AI text detectors, the “news” text was deemed to have been generated by AI.

The main image used in the imposter website’s ‘news report’ is also poorly cropped, with different images superimposed, and bears the title of the fake ‘news report’. dawn.com does not use images in its news reports with text overlays.

The font used in the image is misaligned and the font size also varies. On top of all these inconsistencies, the text appears to have been edited with a basic paint-like tool, with the letter ‘P’ added for Pakistan, as it was cropped from the image being used.

The right side of the fake webpage is also blank, suggesting that it is not supported by Google Ads compared to traditional media.

When verified through website hosting checkers, it appears that the imposter site is hosted through US-based Namecheap, Inc.
