“We are aware of the sentencing of Nimisha Priya in Yemen,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
“We understand that Priya’s family is exploring relevant options. The government is providing all possible assistance in this matter,” he added.
Nimisha, a native of Kerala, was sentenced to death for the murder of Talal Abdo Mahdi, who used to abuse and torture her, in 2017. She injected him with sedatives to recover his passport which was in her possession.
The prosecution established that Nimisha murdered Mahadi, with whom she had opened a health clinic in Sana’a and whom she subsequently married in July 2017. She cut up her husband’s body and threw the parts into a tank. The motive was allegedly revenge for the torture Mahadi allegedly subjected her to. He also confiscated his passport, Nimisha told the court.
Given that President al-Alimi’s approval could lead to her death sentence being carried out within a month, the Save Nimisha Priya Action Council and his relatives intend to accelerate their negotiations with the victim’s family and tribal leaders.
Nimisha’s mother is in Sana’a to negotiate blood money to be paid to the victim’s family.
Negotiations stalled in September when Abdullah Ameer, a lawyer appointed by the Indian Embassy, demanded a pre-negotiation fee of $20,000 (approximately Rs 16.7 lakh), halting further discussions.
Although the MEA had already provided $19,871 in July, Ameer insisted on a total fee of $40,000, payable in two installments, before resuming talks.
The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council managed to raise the first payment through crowdfunding, but then encountered difficulties in ensuring transparency to donors about how the funds were used.
