Gilgit: World Environment Day remained largely ignored in Gilgit-Baltistan, since no important event was held throughout the region this year. However, some national and international non -governmental organizations marked the day in several areas, although with limited public care.
The environmentalists expressed reservations about the lack of importance given up to date in this ecologically sensitive region, and requested urgent action to reduce disasters of environmental degradation and the impacts of climate change.
An event related to the day was held at the point of view of Rakaposhi in the Ghulmet area of the Nagar district. It was organized by the Mountain Area Development Network (Madn) in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan.
The event was attended by students, community members, representatives of several local support organizations and NGO officials. The activities included a cleaning impulse in Rakaposhi Viewpoint, a walk of consciousness to highlight the importance of the day and an exhibition of organic products that show sustainable plastic alternatives.
Ecological bags were distributed among merchants in the local market to encourage a change of plastic bags and promote sustainable habits within the community.
The speakers in the event highlighted the importance of the day. Safdar Hussain, a WWF representative, said that while such local efforts are essential, it is more important to reflect on the broader environmental challenges, particularly in GB, one of the most ecologically fragile regions ecologically in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the Red Crescent Society of Pakistan (Rama GB) organized a cleaning campaign in the Gilgit Bazaar Raja area. A demonstration was taken from the Gilgit municipal office, through different parts of the city and concluding at the Gilgit Press Club.
