The wife of a recently retired green beret that disappeared at the end of January is accused of killing him and dismembling him after he told him that he wanted a divorce, authorities said in North Carolina.
Shana Cloud, 50, was denied the bond on Monday after she was accused of first degree murder and concealment of death in the murder of Clinton Bonnell, 50, as shown by the judicial records.
Bonnell’s remains were discovered in a body of water in a rural area southeast of Fayetteville in February, said Cumberland County Sheriff’s office in a statement. DNA tests confirmed that the remains were Bonnell last week, according to the statement.
Citing the Cumberland County District Prosecutor, Billy West, Affiliate of NBC, Wral de Raleigh, reported that the remains were a dismembered human torso.
West said the authorities gathered digital and alleged video evidence that linked the cloud with the area where the torso was found, the station reported.
Cloud’s lawyer James McRAe Jr., told journalists that she is innocent and eagerly waiting for her day in court.
Bonnell retired from the army in December after more than two decades.
He attended a medical assistant program at a local university when a school official reported him disappeared shortly before 3 pm on January 28, according to an affidavit in support of a search warrant.
When the agents spoke with Cloud, he said he had last seen the day before in a gym in Fayetteville, according to the affidavit. She said they had gone in separate vehicles, says the affidavit, and that she had planned to go to the university campus to study for the next day.
When Cloud woke up the next morning, he told the agents that the Bonnell vehicle was at home, but could not find him, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit indicates that she refused to submit a report of missing persons.
Bonnell’s girlfriend, who presented a report of missing persons after the school official, told the agents that Bonnell spoke with a lawyer about the cloud divorciation on January 27, the day before he disappeared, according to the order.
She last listened to him that night, when she sent a text message telling her that she was at home and that she had told her wife that she wanted a divorce, says the affidavit.
