The houses have been evacuated from an area near a forest fire on the east coast of New Scotland.
New Scotland RCMP says they are helping Halifax Fire and Emergency and the Natural Resources Department at the scene of a forest fire along Ostrea Lake Road, which is located near the port of Musquodoboit.
Police said they are evacuating residents from the block 600 of Ostrea Lake Road, including adjacent roads, to highway 7. road No. 7 had been closed to traffic from Pond Road to hit the lane for a time in the afternoon, but RCMP said the road should reopen after 5 pm
According to David Hendsbee, the municipal councilor of the area, the fire began around 1 PM.
He is monitoring the situation from Foodland in Jeddore’s head, where he said the air is smoked.
He estimates that at least 100 houses in the area have been evacuated.
“I only ask people to be patient during this time, the RCMP and the fire department are doing their best, traffic could be a problem,” he said.
In a statement around 4:50 pm, the municipality said that a comfort center has been established in the Community Center of the Eastern Coast in the port of Musquodoboit for those affected by the fire.
Reflection Lane, Heselton Drive, Birchwood Lane, Laila Lane, Sunset Lane and Ostrea Lake Road, from civic number 607 to the north, to highway 7, have been evacuated, said the municipality.
HRM said that people close to the fire should turn off all windows and doors, turn off the air exchangers and remain inside until air quality improves.
Ronnie Poan has a bowling alley, lanes without pot, located in Strike Lane. He said he could smell smoke around 1 pm.
“I was thinking that it is horrible that someone had a fire in the house today because it is hot, not because it is cold,” he said. “But it was … definitely a forest fire that I smelled.”
Poan said the bowling alley was celebrating a youth club banquet today. He said that some people have stayed because they cannot return home with traffic that only moves in a direction on highway 7.
Around 4 pm, the Halifax Professional Fire Association Published in X to say that the fire remains out of control and the equipment focuses solely on protecting the structures. The equipment is not in the forest for safety reasons, but air support is being provided.
