The withdrawal of all the Russian forces of Ukraine would be one of the main conditions to lift or modify the sanctions of the EU, the European Commission said Wednesday.
The United States reached separate agreements on Tuesday with Ukraine and Russia to stop their attacks in the sea and against energy objectives, and Washington agrees to press to raise some sanctions against Moscow. The EU was not invited to those conversations.
The commission said the EU was well welcomed the agreement between Washington and Kyiv.
“The end of the unprovured and unjustified Russian aggression in Ukraine and the unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces throughout the territory of Ukraine would be one of the main previous conditions to amend or lift the sanctions,” he said in an EU statement for foreign affairs and security policy, Anitta Hipper, in a statement.
Russia said on Tuesday that the United States had agreed to help him raise a series of western sanctions and restrictions in food, fertilizers and navigators as previous conditions for a maritime security agreement in the Black Sea.
Diplomats said Reuters That most curbs listed by the Kremlin are related to the sanctions and restrictions of the European Union.
The commission added that the block had no sanctions aimed at agricultural goods, but it did have “prohibitive tariffs” on grain products imported from Russia and Belarus, which entered into force on July 1.
More tariffs on more agricultural products were still being discussed, as well as some fertilizers.
The countries of the European Union renewed the two frames of sanctions of the block in Russia for another six months at the end of January already this month. Any change in sanctions requires unanimity among its 27 Member States.
“Russia must now demonstrate a true political will to end its war of illegal and not provoked aggression,” Hipper added. “Experience has shown that Russia must be judged by its actions, not for their words.”
