Election Commission tells parties to label AI-generated campaign content ahead of Delhi assembly polls | India News


NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India on Thursday issued an advisory to political parties, urging transparency and accountability in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in political campaigns.
The move comes amid growing concerns about the potential for AI to influence voter opinion and erode trust in electoral processes.

The notice requires political parties to clearly label AI-generated or significantly altered content, such as images, videos and audio, with notations such as “AI Generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content.” Additionally, disclaimers must be included in campaign ads and promotional materials that use synthetic content.

Addressing these concerns, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar commented, “Deep fakes and misinformation have the potential to erode confidence in electoral processes.” He has repeatedly warned against the misuse of AI and deepfake technologies, highlighting the need to be vigilant.
This notice builds on the Commission’s previous efforts to ensure the ethical use of social media and technology in elections. During the Lok Sabha elections, guidelines were issued for responsible use of social platforms.
In a separate initiative to raise voter awareness ahead of the 2025 elections Delhi Legislative Assembly electionsDelhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R. Alice Vaz launched a campaign with more than 3,000 rickshaws in all 70 constituencies of the city. These vehicles are designed to educate and motivate citizens to exercise their right to vote.
“These specially designed cars will spread awareness about the democratic process and encourage active participation of voters,” an official statement highlighted.
