An older man was killed on Saturday night after being hit by a water oil tanker, according to police and rescue officials, since accidents involving heavy vehicles continue to increase in Karachi.
The city has recently witnessed an increase in traffic accidents, especially that they involve heavy vehicles, including Dumpers and water oil tankers, who killed almost 500 people and injured 4,879 in 2024, according to hospital data.
Talking with Dawn.com Today, the officer of the Saeedabad Police Station (SHO) Idris Bangash said: “The driver was reversing the water oil tanker in Qila Altaf, sector 8-E, when he ran over the old man sitting there.”
The man identified as Arif Khan, 75, died on the spot.
Sho said the body was transferred to the Karachi Civil Hospital for legal formalities, adding that the driver managed to escape from the place, leaving the oil tanker behind.
The accident enraged people in the area that damaged the oil tanker, but, with some difficulty, the police dispersed them, taking the custody of the oil company.
Later, some people traveling in two or three vehicles attacked the police with stones, which caused injuries to three police.
“The police appealed at a cane charge and dispersed the mafia,” said the sho.
In compliance with the continuous efforts of the provincial government to control the threat of accidents in Karachi, the city administration extended the complete prohibition imposed on heavy vehicles in the city during another two months.
A total of nine dumpers and water oil tankers were burned by angry mobs last week near the main road that led Chowrangi 4 k after a heavy vehicle hit a bicycle rider, wounding it in the area of northern Karachi.
On Saturday, a police officer said a trailer killed two men who rode a motorcycle with Sharea Liaquat, while a towing truck ran over a young man in the superity (highway) on Thursday.
