Police accused a 42 -year -old man of first -degree murder for the death of a woman who was found shot dead in Edmonton during the weekend.
Priscilla McGreer, a local writer and university educator, was found inside a vehicle on Saturday morning, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
The officers had been called to shooting reports in the 119th Street and Jasper Avenue area just before 4:30 am, police said.
The streets along Jasper Avenue closed to traffic for several hours on Saturday morning as part of the investigation.
Police accused Kyle Laumen, from Edmonton, of first degree murder in McGreer’s death.
Laumen was also accused of aggravated assault and rape of probation.
Friendly and empathic person
Denis Lapierre, executive director of the Learning Center Literacy Association, where McGreer served as an instructor who taught adult students how to read and write, described her as a kind and empathic person with passion for learning that inspired her students.
Lapierre said he had met McGreer most of his life and felt privileged to see her succeed.
He served as its director when I was just a girl who attended primary school in St. Albert and brought her again when she successfully requested an instructor position in the center.
McGreer had been an instructor in the center for the past three years.
Lapierre said that McGreer loved to write, read and was busy chasing his doctorate in technology and learning in adult education.
“A special type of person is needed to come here and, you know, really help students,” said Lapierre an interview with CBC on Tuesday.
“I was totally committed.
“She was so respected … and simply raised the level of intellectual curiosity among our students.”
He said his presence will be deeply surprised between staff and students.
He said the staff plans to establish a vigil within the learning center before classes resume and will celebrate a commemorative meal so that McGreer students and colleagues can meet to present their respects.
“It is very tragic in many ways,” he said.
In a statement on Tuesday, Norquest College officials of Edmonton said McGreer was an appreciated member of the Faculty of Teaching in his university transfer program, where he was an informal instructor.
“Priscilla was a very respected and very dear instructor and colleague. He planned to teach English this semester,” says the statement.
“His loss, two days before the beginning of the term of autumn, is especially moving. Our thoughts are with their family, friends, students and colleagues.
An autopsy was completed on Monday and determined that McGreer died of bullet wounds and that the shape of his death was homicide, police said.
Police said McGreer and Muman were known to each other. In a statement to CBC News on Tuesday, the police said that the case is not being investigated as a femicide or as a homicide of domestic violence.
Criminal records
Judicial records show that the world has an extensive judicial history with condemnations for violent crimes.
In March 2018, Edmonton’s police issued an arrest warrant in the stabbed death of Marlon Jair Núñez, days after the 39 -year -old player was found dead in a basement suite of an Apartment building by Edmonton South.
Laumen was arrested and accused of second degree murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and interfering with human remains. Judicial records show that all charges in the case of homicide were suspended in February 2020.
In a statement to CBC News, the Alberta Crown Prosecutor’s Office said after the preliminary hearing in the case of Núñez, the archive was thoroughly reviewed by a group of high -level crown prosecutors and it was determined that there were “insurmmed obvious problems” that turned out that there was no reasonable probability of conviction.
Judicial records show that theume was convicted in July 2023 by assault that causes body damage and police flight. He received a conditional sentence of 12 months and six months of probation in addition to a prohibition of firearms. He also received credit for 184.5 days of time.
His previous convictions include aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose For an incident in 2012. The following year, it was sentenced to a total of 36 months.
It was convicted in June 2013 for breach of a company, breach of recognition and for wearing a hidden weapon. He was sentenced to 60 days.
That spring was also fined before causing a disturbance.
Judicial records in McGreer’s death program are accused of wearing a prohibited weapon, breaking a court order that prohibits carrying a firearm and an aggravated assault for attacking another person who was on the scene.
Suspicious death chain
The death of McGreer is among a series of suspicious deaths in the city during the long weekend that are now under investigation by the homicide detectives of the city.
Around 8:30 am on Saturday, the officers were called to the 104th and 85th Avenue street, responding to a man’s reports in medical anguish.
An 82 -year -old man, found in the backyard of a nearby house, was taken to the hospital where he died of his wounds. An autopsy for Tuesday has been programmed.
On Sunday, around 7:30 am, the body of a man was found in the Edmonton River Valley. Police said his death is considered suspicious and an autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.
Later on Sunday afternoon, the police responded to another fatal scene. Firefighters who responded to a house fire in the neighborhood of Montrose, in the area of the 59th Street and 119th Avenue area, found a body inside the house on fire.
Police said no arrests have been made, but detectives want to talk to a resident who captured a video of the fire that has been circulating on social networks. An image of the video, shared by the police, shows a house wrapped in overlapping flames with text that indicates that the fire was lit after a verbal argument.
The researchers have not published any detail about the identity of the deceased.
