ECP decides to hold local govt polls in Punjab in last week of December

The Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) decided on Wednesday to celebrate local government elections (GL) in Punjab in the last week of December, whose delimitation process would begin tomorrow and would be completed within two months.

The order, whose copy is available with Dawn.comIt was issued by a bank of four ECP members.

He declared that the ECP had “decided to hold the local government elections in the province of Punjab on the basis of the existing local government law, that is, the Punjab Local Government Law of 2022 and the norms framed in it. The office (ECP) must initiate the process of delimitation from tomorrow and complete it within two months. From then on, the electoral program must be announced and the elections must be held in the last week of December 2025 “.

The order said that “the office is expected to strictly follow the deadlines.”

Today’s order referred to another issued after the hearing held in June by the ECP on the matter, which claimed that the ECP had accepted the Punjab government application of a period of three months to complete various activities related to the elections “in the interest of justice.”

“In case of failure, the commission will issue the appropriate orders on the celebration of local governments elections in the province of Punjab,” said the June order.

Referring to this, today’s order establishes that having not received a response from the Punjab government after a period of three months, the ECP returned to set the matter for an audience today and issued a notice to the Secretary of the Local Government.

According to the Order, the Court for the Hearing today was composed of the president of the ECP, Sikandar Sultan Raja, and three of its members, Nisar Ahmed Durrani, Shah Muhammad Jatoi and Babar Hassan Bharwana.
