Former US president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at the age of 100. Following news of his death, political figures and heads of state around the world praised Carter, celebrating his faith and his time both in office and after.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
“Jimmy Carter’s legacy is one of compassion, kindness, empathy and hard work,” Trudeau wrote. “He served others both at home and around the world throughout his life, and he loved doing it. He was always thoughtful and generous with his advice to me.”
US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden
“Today, the United States and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian,” the president and first lady wrote in a statement. “For six decades, we had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But what’s so extraordinary about Jimmy? Carter, though, is that millions of people across America and the world who never met him also considered him a dear friend.”
The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump
“While I disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our country and all it stands for,” Trump wrote. “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my utmost respect. He was a truly good man, and of course he will be greatly missed. He was also very consequential, much more so than most presidents, after left the Oval Office.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of President Carter and would like to pay tribute to his decades of selfless public service,” Starmer wrote. “His presidency will be remembered for the historic Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, and it was that lifelong dedication to peace that led to him receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.”
“President Jimmy Carter was a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a peacemaker, a lifelong humanitarian, and a tireless worker for Habitat for Humanity,” Singh wrote. “He earned respect and admiration around the world for being a man whose actions matched his values.”
Jagmeet Singh, NDP leader
“President Jimmy Carter was a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a peacemaker, a lifelong humanitarian, and a tireless worker for Habitat for Humanity,” Singh wrote. “He earned respect and admiration around the world for being a man whose actions matched his values.”
Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States
“Elected in the shadow of Watergate, Jimmy Carter promised voters that he would always tell the truth. And he did it: advocating for the public good, consequences be damned,” Obama wrote. “I believed some things were more important than re-election: things like integrity, respect and compassion. Because Jimmy Carter believed, as deeply as he believed anything else, that we are all created in the image of God.”
George W. Bush, 43rd president of the United States
James Earl Carter, Jr., was a man of deeply held convictions. He was loyal to his family, his community and his country. President Carter dignified the office. And his efforts to leave a better world did not end with the presidency. “His work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center set an example of service that will inspire Americans for generations.”
