Amid news of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation as leader of the Liberal Party on Monday morning, reactions from prominent figures began to pile up.
After weeks of attacks from US President-elect Donald Trump, the Republican leader reiterated his stance on Canada becoming a US state.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st state. America can no longer suffer the huge trade deficits and subsidies Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew it and resigned,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be COMPLETELY SAFE from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great nation they would be.!!!”
X owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to social media to comment on the announcement.
“2025 is looking good,” he responded to an X user who said in part: “Trump won. Trudeau resigned.”
Trudeau, in a historic announcement, resigned as leader of the Liberal Party but declared his intention to remain prime minister until a new leader is elected.
“Last night at dinner, I told my children about the decision that I share with you today,” he said in his speech. “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I have to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best choice in those elections.”
This is a developing story…more details to come.
