Federal prosecutors are in the early stages of an investigation into the office of the New York Attorney General, Letitia James, who presented a case of civil fraud against President Donald Trump, according to three people familiar with the matter.
The investigation focuses on whether the New York Attorney General’s office caused a deprivation of legal rights under the color of the law through its civil lawsuits against Trump and its businesses, as well as the National Rifles Association, these people said. It is running without the office of the United States prosecutor for the North District of New York, two of these sources said.
In response to an NBC News investigation, a spokesman for the AG office said: “Any justice system should disturb all Americans. We are strongly behind our successful litigation against the Trump organization and the National Rifles Association, and we will continue to defend the rights of New Yorkers.”
A spokesman for the United States prosecutor’s office did not return a request for comments.
James successfully demanded Trump and his company for what his office said they were fraudulent misrepresentations of their wealth and financial statements. A judge granted James’s office more than $ 300 million in a decrease fine, but the case is in appeal.
James’s office also sued the NRA and its leadership with mixed results. The attorney general had sought the dissolution of the NRA in what is commonly known as the “death penalty”, but a judge annulled those statements.
In 2024, James’s office won his case of civil fraud against the Chief of the NRA, Wayne Lapierre, and a jury condemned him for diverting millions of dollars from the weapons group for his own personal lifestyle.
It is not clear immediately how far is the investigation of the Department of Justice on the office of James and what evidence, if any, the Department of Justice has gathered in the investigation.
