DIG Traffic’s vehicle runs afoul of Karachi’s new e-challan initiative, fined Rs10,000

DIG Traffic Pir Mohammad Shah’s vehicle was issued an e-challan on Wednesday for violating traffic rules.

In June, the Sindh government decided that e-challans for traffic violations would be delivered to the registered residential addresses of vehicle owners. The sale or transfer of vehicles with unpaid fines will not be permitted.

The decision came at a time when the port city witnessed a rise in traffic accidents, particularly involving dump trucks and water tankers, which killed nearly 500 people and injured 4,879 in 2024, according to hospital data.

The e-ticket was issued to the DIG vehicle at Lyari junction as the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

“My driver was given the e-challan for not wearing a seat belt,” the senior police officer said while speaking to dawn.com.

He added that his driver was fined Rs 10,000.

According to a Sindh Police press release on October 28, 1,535 challans have been issued for not wearing a seat belt, 507 challans for riding a motorcycle without a helmet, 419 for speeding, 166 for jumping a red light and 32 for using mobile phone while driving.

Earlier this month, Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon said the biggest problem in the metropolis is the lack of trained drivers, who are also responsible for tragic accidents.

Meanwhile, Karachi Additional IG Javed Alam Odho said that a faceless e-ticketing system would put an end to abuse of powers by the police and their negative attitude towards the public.
