Dozens of millions of people throughout the west and a half of the Atlantic are under heat alerts on Monday, since a dangerous heat wave that began during the weekend continues to move through the region.
The rare heat wave of June broke around 20 records on Sunday and is expected to break more on Monday. According to The Weather Channel, the city of Mitchell, South Dakota, broke its maximum daily on Saturday when temperatures rose to 104 degrees, breaking its previous 101 degree record.
The records were also established on Saturday in Wyoming and Minnesota, according to The Weather Channel.
In the west, Atlantic medium and even Maine, 148 million people were under heat alerts on Monday. Extreme heat warnings have been issued for 75 million people in almost a dozen important cities, including Chicago, Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore and Washington, DC
Chicago to Boston could be experiencing heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees.
“A fond temperatures, oppressive moisture and very light winds are expected today, which leads to dangerous levels of heat,” said the National Meteorological Service in Boston in a position in X. On Tuesday it will be “the hottest day in the section,” the agency said.
“Air temperatures in many areas could pass the mark of the century, and it may seem that the 110 low in some areas,” the agency said. “This is a dangerous level of heat, without significant relief at night!”
The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, urged residents to take precautions.
“Our first summer heat wave is here, and it is very important that the New Yorkers of the five districts take care of themselves in the next few days,” he said in an X publication. “That is correct. Several days of extreme heat.”
The relief of suffocating temperatures will come on Wednesday in the west and Thursday in the northeast when the Heat Dome begins to weaken.
In other parts of the country, severe storms will affect the regions from northern Kansas to Michigan on Monday, bringing harmful winds, great hail and possible tornadoes. From western Texas to southern Wisconsin, storms will run a risk of sudden floods.
