NEW DELHI: customs officials have seized 257 grams of gold hidden inside a screwdriver from a woman’s luggage at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, according to an official statement from the Delhi Customs department.
According to the profile, a 20-year-old passenger from Uttar Pradesh, who had traveled from Jeddah, was placed under surveillance.
The statement mentioned: “He was observed escorting a female passenger in a wheelchair, who was traveling on the same flight from Riyadh to Delhi. Both passengers were intercepted at the exit of the Green Channel.”
During a radiological examination of the woman’s luggage, the images raised suspicions and led to a detailed physical examination.
The customs department further explained: “A piece of yellow metal (gold) of cylindrical shape was found hidden inside a screwdriver, weighing approximately 257 grams.”
The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 18.62 lakh, officials told news agency PTI. The gold has been taken into custody.
