A person calling money for the conservative party in doubt about the validity of the counting process in the recent federal elections, according to a recording obtained by CBC News.
In the call for fundraising, which occurred on Saturday, an officer who identified herself as the party services of the Conservative Party said that the liberals and the media seek to “attack” the conservatives and “scrutiny” the results of two judicial counts won by the conservatives.
Later in the call, she suggested to a possible donor that the results of the counts were not final.
“We need to get up. We need to make sure all votes are precise and counted,” he said.
The person he called seemed to be referring to two tight races that were finally won by the conservatives: the driving of Terra Nova-The Peninsulas and the Windsor-Tecumseh Lakeshore ontarium.
He called a week after judicial counts ended, and after both liberal candidates had admitted their losses.
The call was registered by the recipient, who previously supported the Canada Conservative Party. CBC News does not identify the donor, who fears reprisals.
He said he shared the audio of the call because he felt frustrated and insulted that the party showed doubts about the integrity of the electoral process.
Fund collection strategy
It is not the first time that conservatives try to raise funds suggesting that the liberals are trying to affect the result of the elections after the tickets were thrown.
Shortly after the elections, the part sent an email to its mail list suggesting that their rivals looked for “Take enough seats to go closer to most“And we try to” bow the balance “in the counts.
“It is part of a very common but unpleasant technique to make people done,” said Chris typeove, deputy director of the Center for the study of democratic institutions of the University of British Columbia.
“Both are an emergency bell and they say that urgent funds are needed to address it. And that can put people in a mental state in which perhaps they are more likely to give money … Great image, I think this political advertising strategy is corrosive.”
Conservative spokeswoman Sarah Fischer said in a statement that the party did not question the results, but “wanted to make sure the counts were precise and fair.”
According to the Canadian Law, the counts are automatically triggered when the difference in the number of votes received by the end of end candidates is 0.1 percent or less of the total number of votes cast. The counts are supervised by the elections of Canada, an independent agency.
There are costs for the parties and candidates during the counts, and legitimate reasons for the parties to help analyze the results. However, the counts had already ended at the time of the call, with the confirmed winners.
“It made me ask me, was this an effective approach to collection of funds that was used in recent weeks? And this individual is not ready to let it go?” Tainove said.
“A few weeks ago, it made sense to need scrutineers and perhaps legal representatives there to advance the position of the conservatives and the process. It is not clear why it would be necessary now.”
A recent Leger survey found that 25 percent of conservative supporters said they do not trust electoral results. The public’s confidence in the results of the elections has become a point of inflammation in political discourse after the 2021 “Stop The Weal” movement in the United States, based on the discredited conspiracy that the victory of former President Joe Biden was manipulated.
A call that is back cover
CBC News has verified the veracity of the audio. The phone number associated with the call directs a voicemail message that identifies it as the Voting Scope and Financing Office for the Canada Conservative Party.
The person who calls to greet and thank the follower for past donations is heard for the first time. Then the theme turns to the counts.
“We won the two main electoral counts throughout the country, but the media liberals are trying to attack and analyze the result. So now we have political operators on the field,” he said before asking for a donation of $ 1,750 to the bottom of “Telling the fight.”
The supporter questioned what the party official said, noting that the counts were completed and the conservatives won them.
“I really didn’t like your message. The counts have already ended. And I don’t believe in a media conspiracy, so you are not selling me today,” he said.
The party official doubled.
“At this time, the liberal media are attacking us. They are trying to analyze our results here. Therefore, we need to stand up, we must ensure that all votes are precise and counted.”
“I don’t believe that message, I’m sorry,” said the former donor.
Then the party official hung and the line left.
Fischer said the party is investigating the behavior of the person who calls, since they expect a respectful and adequate phone label of all the people they call.
