Samuel, who turned 29 last month, gives the commanders another creator of games to match Terry McLaurin for the reigning rookie seafood of the year Jayden Daniels in his second season of the NFL. Samuel had 51 trapped for 670 yards and three touchdowns last season with the 49ers.
Washington arrived at the NFC championship game before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion, Philadelphia Eagles. General Manager Adam Peters entered the low season with the third largest salary space to use among 32 teams.
Some of that goes to Samuel, who in 2022 signed an extension of three years that spends next season. The product of South Carolina has 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns since it debuted for the 49ers in 2019.
The 49ers last month gave Samuel and his agent permission to find an exchange after requesting a move at a season final meeting with coach Kyle Shanahan.
San Francisco entertained offers for Samuel the last low season, but had nothing good enough to make an exchange. General manager John Lynch said after the season that the Niners were not looking to exchange Samuel, who was an All-Pro in 2021 before his production fell.
With Washington, Samuel immediately becomes annotation number 2 together with McLaurin, which comes from its fifth season of 1,000 consecutive yards.
