A Colombian man has been prosecuted in the United States after being extradited from Canada for positions related to the smuggling of a 32 -year -old Mexican woman who drowned shortly after crossed the border towards Champlain, New York, south of Montreal, in December 2023.
The man, Jhader Augusto Uribar, 36, lived in Quebec when he alleged that he had led Ana Karen Vásquez-Flores near the border, then indicated on WhatsApp messages about where to go before being collected by his associates , According to the criminal complaint filed in the United States District Court in Northern New York.
The document says that the husband of Vásquez-Flores, Miguel Mojarro-Magana, had contacted Uribar-Tobar in Tiktok, where he alleges that he announced smuggling services. Less than a week later, Mojarro-Magana connected the $ 2,500 man to help his wife cross the United States.
On the night of December 11, 2023, according to the document, Uribe-Tobar sent a text message to Mojarro-Magana to say that Vásquez-Flores had arrived at the Great Chazy River, where they had instructed him to cross.
Some 40 minutes later, Mojarro-Magana received a message, saying: “Brother Hello, I think he wet or turned off his cell phone. Brother, I told him to hold him while crossing.”
Uribe-Tobar supposedly told Mojarro-Magana that he had people looking for Vásquez-Flores and that “I already sent them a pin to see if they saw it, I told them what happened and that she is pregnant.”
The next day, Mojarro-Magana reported his wife’s disappearance to the United States border patrol agents in Champlain, where the police, the border patrol and the firefighters began to look for her. His body was found in the river on December 14, 2023.
Accusations against Uribe-Tobar have not been tested in court. They have a minimum term of three years in prison and a maximum of life imprisonment.
