New York-The first-time nominated Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker and Bad Company will be included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a class that also includes the pop star Cyndi Lauper, the Pioneers of Hip-Hop Outkast, the rock duo The White Stripes and Grunge Masters Soundgarden.
Salt-n-Pepa, the first female rap act to achieve the status of gold and platinum, and the late singer and composer Warren Zevon will obtain the prize of musical influence. The late record producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins and bassist Carol Kaye will obtain the Musical Excellence Award.
The deceased Cocker, who sang in Woodstock and was better known for his cover of “With a little help from my friends” of the Beatles, had the support of Billy Joel, Billy Gibbons of Zz Top and Pete Thomas, member of Elvis Costello and the attractions, who argued that Cocker is “approximately the most rocky.”
Soundgarden, with the late Chris Cornell as a singer, enters the hall in his third nomination. Two other acts of grunge follow in the hall: Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company comes into radio accessories with basic sand-rock products such as “feeling like doing love”, “I can’t get enough” and “Rock fantasy ‘N’ Roll”.
The Ahmet Ertegun award, awarded to unreasonable industry professionals who had a great influence on music, will go to Lenny Wararker, a former Warner Bros. Record chief who signed Prince and ReM, and were part of Madonna’s albums, Randy Newman, the Doobie brothers, Rickie Jones, Paul Simon and Gary Clark Jr.
Some nominees who did not enter this year include Mariah Carey, Phish, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, The Black Crowes and Oasis.
The “The Twist” Checker recording and the posterior “Let’s Twist Again” are considered among the most popular songs in the history of rock ‘n’ Roll. The 83 -year -old has expressed his frustration that he had not been granted before, including the AP in 2014: “I do not want to enter there when I am 85 years old. I will tell you that they leave dead, so it is better that you do it quickly while I am still smiling.”
Lauper jumped to fame in the 1980s with successes such as “Time After Time” and “The girls just want to have fun” and won a Tony award for “Boots Kinky”. Outkast, composed of André 3000 and Big Boi, has six Grammys and the reputation of pushing hip-hop limits. The white stripes, formed by Jack White and Meg White, were dear independent in the early 2000s with songs like “Seven Nation Army.”
Artists must have launched their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they are eligible for induction. The induction ceremony will take place in Los Angeles this fall.
The nominees were voted for more than 1,200 artists, historians and professionals of the music industry. The selection criteria include “the impact of an artist on other musicians, the scope and longevity of his career and body, as well as his innovation and excellence in style and technique.”
Last year, Mary J. Blige, Cher, Foreigner, a tribe called Quest, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, the Dave Matthews band and the singer-guitarist Peter Frampton were induced.
