Chrysler is recalling hundreds of thousands of Jeep plug-in hybrid vehicles due to a faulty battery that can fail and cause a fire.
The recall applies to more than 20,000 vehicles in Canada, 320,000 in the United States and more than 30,000 in other markets.
Chrysler, owned by Netherlands-based Stellantis, is aware of 19 fires and one injury potentially related to the problem, which were discovered through an internal investigation.
The batteries were manufactured by Samsung SDI America, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Vehicle owners, including certain Jeeps Wrangler 4xe vehicles with model years between 2020-2025 and some Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe SUV With model years from 2022 to 2026, it is recommended that vehicles be parked outside and away from structures until a solution to the problem is determined.
Vehicle owners should also avoid charging their vehicles because the risk is reduced when the battery runs out, according to the company.
Interim notification letters are expected to be sent to vehicle owners by December 2, and additional letters will be sent once the final solution is available.
