Centre plans pension scheme for gig workers, firms to contribute | India News


New Delhi: In a significant step to improve social security for concert workers, Ministry of Labor and Employment It is developing a Transaction -based pension policywith the aggregators required to register with 1-2% of its annual turnover towards the scheme. The initiative is aimed at almost a crore platform throughout India, a government source said on Friday.
According to the scheme, each concert worker will be assigned a universal account number, allowing deductions based on salary transactions on multiple platforms. Employers will contribute by invoice. “The discussions with state governments are underway, and the scheme will soon be sent for cabinet approval,” added the source.
The initiative addresses the challenge of determining the employer’s responsibility due to the commitment of concert workers with multiple platforms. This policy is aligned with the E-Shram portal, launched in August 2021 to register workers in the un organized sector. As of January 27, 30.6 workers of millions of rupees have registered on the platform, which integrates 12 social security schemes.
According to a 2022 Niti Aayog report, India had 77 Lakh concert workers in 2020-21, with a number that now exceeds 1 million rupees. Currently, 47% of concert work are medium, 22% highly qualified and 31% of low qualification.
The Social Security Code, 2020, proposed a National Social Security Board to recommend schemes for concert workers. The aggregators can contribute to 1-2% of their annual turnover, limited to 5% of the total payments to the concert workers.
In addition, the Government plans to extend the coverage of the workers of the Low PMJAY concert for health insurance. The scheme is expected to provide very necessary financial stability for concert workers.
