Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit his hometown of Fort Smith, NWT, on Wednesday, his first official visit to the territory since he was elected.
According to Prime Minister’s office, Carney and Prime Minister RJ Simpson will meet with local families on Wednesday morning at Fort Smith to discuss challenges of affordability and food insecurity.
Carney is also scheduled to meet with local leaders in Fort Smith on the impact of forest fires on the NWT
Although this season of forest fires has been relatively quiet so far, the territory has been beaten by fires in recent years, including the evacuation of Fort Smith, there are River and Yellowknife in 2023.
Carney was born in Fort Smith and lived in the city of southern NWT until her family moved south when she was about six years old.
On Thursday he will be in Inuvik, where he will visit the local community center and meet with Natan Obed, the president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and Duane Smith, the president of the Regional Corporation of INUVIALUIT.
The bill C-5 is expected to discuss the main project legislation of the Federal Government.
The Federal Government said that it would celebrate a series of “summits” during the summer with the first nations, Inuit and Methis to discuss the Canadian Construction Law, which gives the Government the power to accelerate the projects and avoid certain laws, government regulations and environmental evaluations if an industry project is considered in the national interest.
The legislation has been controversial, and many groups of the first nations say it is a violation of their constitutional treaties and rights.
