As thousands of people aligned in the streets to celebrate the victory of the Premier League title in the Premier League of the Liverpool Soccer Club, a car collided with several pedestrians in the center of the city, police said on Monday.
When describing it as an “major incident” in X, the Merseyside police said that the car “stopped at the scene and a detained man.”
In a separate statement, the police said that “the incident occurred when thousands of fans aligned in the streets of the city to celebrate the victory for the title of the Premier League of the Liverpool Football Club.
The images of the scene showed police cords in their place around a road very full of vehicles and emergency instead.
The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, described the “frightful” scenes in an X publication. “My thoughts are with all the injured or affected,” he said, adding that he was “being updated on the developments.”
The Northwest ambulance service said in a statement that it was “evaluating the situation and working with other members of emergency services.”
“Our priority is to ensure that people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” the statement added.
An eyewitness, Natasha Rinaldi, told the British station Sky News that “people sounded desperate” and saw that the car had “hit people.” (Sky News is owned by Comcast, the NBC News parent company).
“Then people began to hurry to go after the driver and tried to break the car. The police did everything to block and remove people,” he said. “We could hear screams and screams. We were very confused.”
“Some of my friends were there and the car was so close to them. It was a horrible scene, nobody expected it.”
