The soprano and director Barbara Hannigan of Nueva Scotia was appointed one of the three receivers of the Polar Award of Music on Tuesday, along with Herbie Hancock and Queen.
The Sweden -based prize committee cited Hannigan’s ability to overcome the limits and expand the hearing horizons through their artistic elections.
“Its exceptional musicality and courage make it one of the main performers of the world of contemporary classical music,” said the Polar Prize.
Hannigan’s unique stature as a singer and director was a process that began about 15 years ago.
“I did not propose to have a career change and be an orchestra director. I simply accepted a couple of concerts in 2011 to try the waters about whether this was something I wanted to do,” he told CBC’s Q In 2019.
The Polar Prize was founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, the late editor and manager of the Swedish band Abba. The previous winners have covered musical genres and included Paul McCartney, Metallica, Yo-Yo Ma and Ravi Shankar.
